Leak test

Sewer services play a key role in keeping sewage systems intact and thus ensuring that sanitary facilities are in perfect condition. Damage and leaks in pipes and sewers cause deposits to build up over time and lead to pipe and sewer defects. Leak tests have proven effective in preventing this. This test procedure checks sewers and pipes for leaks to ensure that wastewater does not escape into the ground.

What is a leak test?

During the leak test, pipes and sewers are examined for leaks. It is important to check whether wastewater is leaking into the ground and contaminating the groundwater. The test procedure checks whether previous measures such as sewer rehabilitation have been successful and that the sewers are intact. Preventive measurements have also proven useful for minimizing consequential damage and quickly initiating the necessary work in the event of leaks. Various methods are used for the inspection, such as air and water pressure tests.

Leak testing using air and water pressure

When testing for leaks using air and water pressure tests, the pipe is filled with water or air and pressurized. If there is a leak in the pipe and water or air escapes through holes, this can be seen from the drop in pressure. The pressure drop is measured and then recorded so that further action can be taken. It is particularly important in water protection areas to check the tightness and to locate leaks quickly.

Leak test
required by law

According to the Federal Water Act, the German government has declared leak testing to protect groundwater to be mandatory for all property owners. As the owner or operator of wastewater systems, you are legally obliged to regularly check the condition of the sewer systems in accordance with EU Directive 91/271/EEC and DIN 1986-30. This helps to protect groundwater. The respective cities and municipalities are responsible for monitoring compliance with this regulation.

Whether you have to check your private house pipes depends on the federal state in which you live. In some federal states, there is no obligation to have a leak test, while in others, the initial test must be carried out within ten years. It is important to note that EU Directive 91/271/EEC does not apply to private sewage pipes, but to municipal ones. DIN 1986-30 recommends testing the pipes after 20 years.
